Owner Sam Brakeley began his trailbuilding career at the age of eight, clearing brush and swamping as his father ranged out ahead of him with a chainsaw in the woods along the shores of Hermit Lake. What he lacked in know-how, he more than made up for with energy and drive.
We’ve progressed since those rudimentary beginnings and today we bring a strong background and professional eye to the job, while still having the energy and drive that was present nearly two decades prior. Hermit Woods Trailbuilders, LLC was formed in 2013 to address the growing demand for well-built, long-lasting trails, trail structures and landscaping designs across northern New England (including Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts) and New York. We employ a wide variety of techniques and designs to ensure that you receive a first-class product.
Sam has worked for the Randolph Mountain Club, the Northern Forest Canoe Trail, Vermont Youth Conservation Corps, the Upper Valley Trails Alliance, and private individuals and combines the best of those organizations with a unique trail sense of his own to create beautiful, enduring work.
Sam is also passionate dry stone waller and is a DSWA-GB Level 2 certified waller and DSWA Certified Instructor. He has participated in numerous classes at The Stone Trust based in Dummerston, Vermont and has been building stone walls for more than 5 years.
Finally, Sam is a dedicated trail user and long-distance tripper. CLICK HERE to learn more about some of Sam’s trips over the years.
